This charming 19th c. oil on canvasdepicts young girl in red top and full skirt carrying a bundle of kindling within a fenced yard and measures 18 1/8" x 12 3/8". It is artist signed, W.M. Darling lower left and bears an inscription (not in te artist's hand lower right, "Wilder Darling". Wilder M. Darling (1855-1933), known as the "Dean of Toledo Painters", was born in Sandusky and studied in Cincinnatti, Munich and Paris working with some of the "heavy hitters" of the era including William Meritt Chase and Frank Duveneck. Much of his career he spent either in Holland or Toledo until the GREAT WAR forced him to abandon his place in Netherlands. This work appears to be one of his Netherlandish subjects and is executed in his typical style with rich earthy palette, superb handling of human form and fondness for the play of light and shadow. It is clean and stable and has dabs of inpaint in each of 4 quadrants: most notably on the subject's cheeks and shoulders. WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS.
