The new company purchased the former Thomas Manufacturing Company factory in Thomaston, which had originally been built to roll metal for clock movements. Plume & Atwood quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of brass products in the United States, including oil lamps. The company's lamps were known for their high quality and craftsmanship, and they were popular with both consumers and businesses. Plume & Atwood produced a wide variety of oil lamps, from simple hand-held lanterns to elaborate table lamps and hanging lamps. The company's lamps were made in a variety of styles, including Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. Plume & Atwood oil lamps were especially popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when they were used in homes, businesses, and other public places. The company's lamps were also used by railroads, ships, and the military. Plume & Atwood continued to manufacture oil lamps until the 1970s, when the company was acquired by the General Electric Corporation. GE continued to produce Plume & Atwood oil lamps for a few more years, but eventually discontinued the line. Today, Plume & Atwood oil lamps are considered to be antiques and collectibles. They are prized by collectors for their high quality, craftsmanship, and historical significance.
