VINTAGE GOLDEN SHELL MOTOR OIL CLAM PORCELAIN SIGN GAS PUMP PLATE GASOLINE some rusting around the mounting holes-see photos for details Is it an original or a reproduction? I am not an expert,
please do your own research however there are a few things that can be looked
at to determine it a porcelain sign is an original or a reproduction. 1) Most quality reproductions state they are reproductions
on the sign. 2) When the Porcelain enamel is applied, the base
coast is layered first and all other colors are layered on top. When you run your fingers across you can feel
the layers. A reproduction is flush or
flat – this is a good indication that the sign is a reproduction or fake. 3) Because of the layering of the porcelain, when a
sign is chipped you should be able to see the base layer (usually white) around
the chipped area. 4) Look at the lettering in the sign – pride was
taken by the professional artists when they were first produced. Letters are straight and will not be wavy in
appearance. Most reproductions may appear
curvy or possibly “cartoonish” in appearance. Plus, there may be a lack of detail in the reproductions. 5) Hanging Grommets – Solid brass (or another
material that resists rust) grommets were placed inside the mounting holes on
some signs. Many reproductions also have brass “plated” grommets. Look at the wear – an original sign will show
the wear as it has been used and possible hung many times. However new old stock (NOS) would show no
wear and would be hander to tell. 6) The location of the mounting holes is also a
good indication. Reproduction signs usually
do not have mounting holes in the original location. You would need to see an original sign to determine
the correct location of the mounting holes. 7) Rust is also a good indicator. Rust on an original sign will be black or
dark brown whereas the rust of a reproduction will be orange-ish brown. The sign does have raised lettering indicating layering. There are no grommets installed. The rust is dark brown, and you can see the layering around the chipped/rusted area. Even though this sign is yellow, you can see that a white base coat was applied first.
