Vintage Girard Perregaux Golden Shell Motor Oil

This is a vintage pocket watch dating to about 1939. This is handsome, clean, and in  good condition. Shell gave these away as premiums to dealers. The watch was supposedly lubricated with Golden Shell Motor Oil. The watch runs well and keeps time. The time sets as it should.  The case is silver toned and it is about 43mm wide not including the crown.  The movement is a Girard Perregaux Swiss made hand winder and it has 77 jewels. The front and back crystals are clean and clear. The dial is depicted accurately in the pictures. These watches have a very interesting backstory, as just 30,000 were manufactured for the 1940 release. They were a novelty item to show how Shell Motor Oil was so fine, it could provide lubrication for a Swiss watch. The story is that Shell sent GP GALLONS of oil to use, when realistically the watches only used 2 drops each. Their complete ignorance of how watches functioned makes this story and the collectability of the watch. It turned out the watches lubed with motor oil did not run properly, and they had to recall them all and service them with proper watch oil and redistribute them. The entire campaign became a farce. It is unknown how many were actually redistributed through Shell oil dealers or how many remain. Please note that all pictures are taken on the macro setting.
