Portrait of Michael Thomas Sadler (3 January 1780 – 29 July 1835) Radical British politician, philanthropic businessman, social reformer, and leader of the factory reform movement in England. Elected to parliament in 1829. Michael T. Sadler is perhaps best known for his campaign to limit work hours and improve conditions for child laborers. Sadler had an active interest in the plight of child labourers from 1806, when as superintendent of the ‘New Sunday School’ in Leeds. He observed that children employed in factories were unable to make adequate use of these very limited educational opportunities as a direct consequence of the extremely long hours they were working. In 1832, he held hearings into the working conditions of children employed in British textile factories. The stories the children told helped lead to new laws regulating the conditions under which children could be employed.
A full-length portrait of Michael Thomas Sadler is currently in the collection of London National Portrait Gallery. ( See photos). It was painted before 1830 by British portrait painter, William Robinson ( 1799-1839). The portrait at the London National Portrait Gallery shows many similarities to this portrait and looks like it was completed around the same period. We attribute this portrait to be by William Robinson or his circle. Superb portrait of British social reformer, Michael T. Sadler. Ca 1820.
