Estate Find Sara Hawks1893Still Life with FlowersOil Painting We offer an oil painting dated 1893 and signed by Sara Hawks of a table scape of flowers and leaves in a clear glass vase. The image is a copy of an earlier painting by Barton Stone Hays (1826-1914) and we have included an image of his painting in our picture gallery. Barton was an artist and teacher working in Indiana and Ohio from 1850-1882 and later in Minnesota. William Merritt Chase, William Forsyth and John Elwood Bundy were among his noted students. The painting is signed "Sara Hawks 1893" at the lower right corner. The painting is on artist board and retains the Devo & Co. label on the reverse. History is unavailable on Sara Hawks, but the quality of the painting indicates the teacher's hand may be on the painting. The artist board measures 13 3/8" in height and 18 3/8" in width. The image measures 13" in height and 18" in width. The frame measures 19 1/4" in height and 24 1/4" in width with a depth of 1/2". The painting has surface grime consistent with age and is in very good antique condition with no loss of paint. As seen in the photographs, there is loss to molding on the gilt frame.
