Orig 1940 Plein Air California Desert Oil/Canvas Gilt Carved Frame SIGNED/NICE! An original oil painting on canvas measuring 18 x 22 in. (in original hand carved gilt wood frame with total dimension of 27 x 23 in.) and depicting a plein air California desert landscape probably in or around the Coachella Valley and signed and dated lower left "12/28/40" and "D.I. Wheeler" and in fine condition - fresh from an old Southern California estate and said to have been purchased directly from the artist soon after it's execution
There is a very beguiling simplicity and directness in the execution of this charming California desertscape that is reminiscent of the French post-impressionist artist Henri Rousseau but with obvious training, as if the artist consciously sought to simplify the beauty of the desert creating a realistic and yet also an idealistic scene of purple mountains, and delicate even unearthly desert flora.
And while we have not been able to pinpoint this particular artist - male or female - there is an obvious love affair with his/her landscape that suggests both training and very probably a background in commercial and/or illustration art.
Painted on a winter's day on December 28, 1940 the artist may well have started and completed his/her scene in one clear desert day or the date may suggest the date of completion.
The sky is depicted masterfully and the white flora in the left foreground appear to echo the fleecy whiteness above. While the impressionistic floral beds in the same area are reminiscent of more conventional California plein air impressionism.
The work is in near fine condition, though no doubt in need of some cleaning as we removed it from the wall of the estate where it was said to have hung for the last 60+ years.
The frame is lovely and appears original to this oil on canvas and is the perfect accompaniment to this now 84 year old work of art by an adept if not readily identifiable artist working in plein air in Southern California that long ago winter in the desert.
