ARTIST: Carlo
Hornung-Jensen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at
auctions multiple times, including famous auction houses such as Bruun
Rasmussen, Christie’s and Bonham’s. He was a popular exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg.
He studied at the Academy of Royal Art in Copenhagen in 1904-1906 and at the École nat. des beaux arts under Gabriel
Ferrier og Léon Bonnat from 1906-07 . He also joined a
community of artists called “Dyrehavens malere”(Painters of the Animal Garden).
Dyrehaven is a park located north of Copenhagen, which comprised an extremely
popular scenery for many Danish artists. Hornung-Jensen is a versatile artist,
and his choice of scenes include landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, harbors and
still-life. PAINTING:
Oil on board. The painting is a well-painted, impressionistic rendering of the
coastal scenery of Bornholm, Denmark with its figure-like rocky formations and hardy
vegetation. In the horizon in the far background, there’s a vague silhouette of
a ship sailing near the shoreline. There’s an inscription on the back of the painting,
which dates it to 1931. On the front of the frame is a small plaquette with the
artist’s name. Signed: “C.Hornung-Jensen” in the lower left corner. The
signature is in red and is half hidden by the frame. SIZE: With
frame: 43,5 cm/17.1" * 34,5 cm/13.6". Without frame: 31,5 cm/12.4"
* 22,5 cm/8.9". CONDITION: The painting is in
great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has
scratches and stains.
