Oil on Canvas - John Opie? Vandyke School?. "Portrait of Mrs. Giddy in widow's dress holding a book" Purchased in Palm Beach County, Florida in 1996 An old label on the stretcher refers to the portrait as attributed to John Opie, RA and painted in 1787. The label also references a 1911 book, "John Opie and his Circle" by Ada Earland. Upon researching the book, in 1911 the painting belonged to Rev. H. de Courcelles which appears accurate as there is a small round identifying label with that name on it on the stretcher. There are two additional older labels on the stretcher. One of which is unreadable, and the other at the bottom of that of a framer/restorer, BF Jackson which also supports the accuracy of the 1911 book. (Photo #6 & #7) In the Earland book, there is a note under the subject painting where the restorer felt the painting was older than the 1780s date and belonging to the Vandyke School. (Photo #10) Overall, the painting is in good to very good condition, there is one small repair noticeable on the back of the canvas, as well as some light surface scratches in top left of painting. The period antique frame, while not original to the painting, does compliment it well but had a chip in the gesso in one area. (See photo #4) Measurements are: 32.25" Width 37.5" Height 1.5" Depth Frame depth 4" Shipping cost will be finalized upon sale of painting.
