He attended Shadduck, a private school in Faribault, Minnesota, and then studied journalism at a junior college before starting a career as a commercial artist. He started painting while working as graphics director for Public Broadcasting System's Bilingual Children's Television, and in this capacity did some of the first computer animations for TV.
