Within six months of his birth his family moved to Portland where he would spend most of his life. Jack's childhood was spent exploring the natural world and drawing the things he loved. His family had an appreciation for the arts and encouraged Jack to pursue his dream of becoming a professional artist. Jack later returned to Eugene where he received his degree in art from the University of Oregon in 1974. Soon after graduating he began showing in galleries and has worked as a full time artist ever since. Braman divides his time between field study and painting in his studio. He often camps, hikes and explores the beautiful landscapes of the Western states. It is here within the landscape that Jack does small paintings, sketches, and photographs to establish a relationship with the subjects which will later be used to develop larger paintings in his studio. In 2005 Jack and his wife, Jeanne, left the fast moving pace of Portland, Oregon, and moved to the rural valley of Grays River, Washington. Their home and Jack's studio sit on the north hillside overlooking the valley. A peaceful river winds through the pasture land and forested mountains to the south. There is a panoramic view of the skies, the changing seasons and wildlife. The abundant wildlife includes a large herd of elk that graze the pastures. Inspiration for painting is right outside the door. Living in this rural setting, escaping the busy life of the city, allows Jack the freedom to slow down, and absorb each day, gain awareness of the seasons and the natural world around him. This is a place where Jack can focus on the importance of life, his spiritual connection, emotions, family and friends. A place where he, as an artist, can improve his skills, and gain a deeper understanding of what he is creating and why.
