Henry W. Smith Oil Painting Western Landscape Horses Cowboy California Vintage Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage, framed oil painting by Henry W. Smith. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This oil on board painting depicts a Western landscape with a rider on horseback leading a pack horse; he is either a cowboy or perhaps a prospector. The rider is traveling over a golden hill with blooming sagebrush, and there are snow-capped mountains beyond. The exact location depicted is not known, but the landscape bears a resemblance to the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The sight area is approximately 15 1/2 inches by 19 7/16 inches. The painting is framed in a gold-finished frame with a linen liner. The exterior frame dimensions are about 21 1/2 inches by 25 3/8 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 5 pounds 11.9 ounces. It would be a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage art. Identification This painting is by Henry W. Smith (?-2010). The backing has a label from the Glory Hole Gallery of Sonora, California. The exact age of this vintage, undated piece is not known. Per his February 14, 2010 obituary in The Press Democrat, Smith was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He had artistic proclivities early in life. He was a lighting designer in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Sonora and becoming a full-time artist. Later, he moved to Cloverdale, California with his wife, Janet, where he continued painting landscapes. Smith's paintings were exhibited at galleries in California. Condition This piece looks great overall. The painting is clean and without damage. The frame has light wear. The brown paper backing has some rips, as shown. In my opinion, this piece is ready to hang and enjoy. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
