A fine impressionist oil marine harbor scene painting by Australian American artist Hayley Lever (1876-1958). Lever was born in Adelaide, Australia and studied first at the Adelaide’s Prince Alfred College and later attended James Ashton’s Academy of Art. He then traveled and studied in England, settling in St. Ives, painting views of Cornwall and eventually exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Lever moved to New York around 1910-11, painting scenes of the city and surroundings, and summering in Gloucester, Mass, where he painted and taught sketching and painting classes at his summer studio. He became well known for his post-impressionist marine and landscape paintings. Oil on board, signed lower right, artist placard lower center, titled on verso “Harbor Scene” on a Spanierman Gallery (NY) label, and housed in a decorative giltwood frame.
