A phenomenal work by distinguished Mexican painter Manuel Herrera Cartalla (1915-1977).
Cartalla’s style reflects a clear evolution from the Mexican muralists of the prior generation and his teachers Alfredo Zalce and José Chávez Morado. This work is a prime example of his larger oil paintings depicting traditional Mexican domestic life.
The auction record for Cartalla’s work was set in 2010 for his 1952 painting “Flores de la corona de Cristo” which sold at Christie’s New York for $10,625.
This work is oil on canvas wrapped around board and is signed in the lower right. It is housed in an appropriate wood frame. Size

Manuel Herrera Cartalla was born in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche in 1915. In 1944 he entered the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas where he studied with Alfredo Zalce and José Chávez Morado, as well as at the Escuela de Artes del Libro. His works were exhibited at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Additionally, he exhibited in Switzerland and Japan where his work can be found in private collections. He was a member of the Sociedad Mexicana de Grabadores. Condition
: Very good overall condition. Frame rubbing along edges with associated minor losses. A few minor scattered surface abrasions and minor inpainting. Frame with wear and losses to finish. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
