A majestic landscape of Yosemite in California by American artist Benjamin Champney (1817-1907). Champney was born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire and began his career as a lithographer in Boston. He then went to study in Europe, with his artist roommate John Kensett, eventually returning to America, where he became one of the founders of the White Mountain School. He spent many summers sketching White Mountain scenes, and the remainder of the year doing oil paintings in his studio from these sketches. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1871 lower left, with a Boston art canvas and Christie’s auction label (1/19/23) on verso, and housed in a molded giltwood frame.
