this is a beautiful impressionistic vintage oil on canvas fall foliage painting of two early American houses in a hilly section of Woodstock, Vermont with Mt. Ascutney looming in the background - the painting was done c.1940's by well-listed Vermont artist Arthur Wilder (1857-1945) - the painting was purchased well after Wilder had died from an estate auction in Vermont held by the next of kin of the Wilder estate - it was without wooden stretchers & rolled up at the time of purchase as with many other of Wilder's paintings - the person from whom I purchased the painting had the painting placed on proper wooden stretchers; & I purchased the frame a few years ago - the painting shows a wonderful mix of fall foliage colors that one sees in New England during the Autumn season - when looking at this fine painting, the first thing that strikes the viewer is the explosion of brilliant yellow, red, & orange colors in the stand of maple trees beside & behind the antique house on the left side of the painting - these colors were done by the talented artist with relatively thick brushstrokes as compared to the much lighter brushstrokes in the rest of the painting - the next thing that draws the viewer in is the looming image of Mt. Ascutney (3,100 ft. tall) shown at a distance behind the two antique houses - the mountain was well-painted with a sense of cloudy mist or fog between the houses & the mountain - the artist accomplished this with a palette of pale blue, gray & off-white colors worked onto the canvas with subtle brushstrokes - above the mountain, the artist created a gorgeous robbins-egg blue sky with puffy off-white clouds floating through the sky - the painting itself is a generous 18" x 24" & is in very good vintage condition - it is well-enhanced by a contemporary gilded wooden frame with an off-white inner border - the frame measures 22" x 28", & is in very good condition - I took a number of photos of this painting from different angles & with different lighting sources in for the viewer to get an idea how this painting would appear under different lighting circumstances - painting can be picked up at my home in Swanzey, NH to avoid shipping cost -
