ANTIQUE PAINTING BY WILLIAM TURNER DANNAT ~THE JET COLLAR~     Offered here is this original oil on canvas by listed artist William Turner Dannat circa late 1800's. The painting is titled "The Jet Collar" referring to the jet necklace that is worn by the woman in the painting. Beautiful painting and housed in its original, ornate gilt frame. MEASUREMENTS; The oil on canvas measures 20 1/2" tall and 14 3/4" wide. The frame measures 28" tall and 22 1/2" wide. MARKINGS & DOCUMENTATION; The painting is faintly signed by Dannat in the upper right corner. This was last purchased in 2005 at the Roger King Gallery in Newport, RI. The documentation from that purchase will be included. THE ARTIST; Born in New York city, William Turner Dannat, like so many of his contemporaries, left America to study in Europe, where he made a name for himself as a teacher and artist. Dannat studied with Hungarian painter Mihaly Munkacsy, at the Royal Academy in Munich, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Carolus Duran. His famous painting of Gypsy musicians, Quartette, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, caused a sensation at the Paris Salon of 1884 and reportedly inspired many expatriate students at the Academie Julian to study with him; his students there included Frank Benson and Edmund Tarbell. Dannat exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design. In Paris he exhibited at the Paris Salon, of which he was a member. He was made a Chevalier, Officer, and finally a Commander of the Order of the Legion of Honor. His career, inspired by considerable talent and greeted with great acclaim, was cut short by poor health. Dannat's works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Luxembourg Museum and the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris.
