This romantic oil on board portrait dates to around 1870 and has historical significance. The lovely young lady pictured is most likely a member of the prominent White family of Haverhill Massachusetts. Painted on artist board from Frost & Adams of Boston which went into business in the late 1860s. Written on the back is “James D White Haverhill Mass”. James White (1824-1901) probably had this painting commissioned and framed, possibly of and for his daughter Lizzie. Both are pictured in the last photo but unfortunately Lizzie is obscured by the horse. James is the gentleman to the left. Both are descendants of William White (1610-1690) an early and important figure in Massachusetts. The painting is charmingly naive, suggesting it may have been done by an itinerant artist, initialed bottom right. The painting is in excellent condition and has vivid colors, period frame has some wear. Measures 14” x 12” to ends of frame. Sight is 5” x 3.5”. Follow me to keep up with my latest finds :)
