this is a wonderful antique oil painting after Gilbert Stuart depicting an upper profile of President George Washinton - the painting was created c.1875 & was reframed c.1915 by a Keene, NH framing company (see photo #15) - the canvas & stretchers were originally from a New York art products company (see photo #16) - on the reverse of the painting, you will see some small white marks - these are repaired aged "pinholes" that were in the canvas - there have also been new wooden "keys" placed in the corners of the stretchers to keep the canvas properly tight - the painting has been professionally restored where the old dark & grimy chimney smoke infused varnish was removed & the painting surface was professionally cleaned - the old dirty gray-brown facial color reverted to the proper pinkish skin tone that the artist originally painted & intended - the collar, shirt, & tie that Washington wears were dark brown-gray when I purchased the painting - the cleaning process brought out the bright white of these items that the artist also originally intended - for whatever reason, the very talented artist did not sign the painting - the artist who created this painting after the famous portrait done by Gilbert Stuart got this painting pretty much right when you compare this painting with the Stuart painting - and, this painting is clearly a true antique artwork considering that it was done c.1875 - the painting measures 24" x 20" & is in very good restored antique condition - note that there is a lot of very fine craquelure throughout the painting - the replaced frame is also antique & measures 27" x 23" & is in very good restored antique condition - p.s. the last 3 photos show the painting with its original gilded gesso wooden frame which the buyer may choose for the painting - however, the original frame is very heavy & much larger (35" x 31") & would cost much more for the boxing & shipping than what the listing shows - with the heavy & larger original frame, I would suggest FedEx for the shipper as they are usually safer with large & heavy frames - if the buyer picks up the painting at my home in Swanzey, NH, that would save on the shipping cost -
