Very unique pre world war 2 amateur painting that was painted in Nov 1941 and presented to “Aunt Myrtle” for a Christmas present. It’s cute and charming, exuding a pre mid century modern vibe. The artist is Laurence Etter who, per Google search of obituary, was a world war 2 marine that later went on to be highly accomplished over a life that saw him live 97 years! What I find remarkable is the timing of the note on the back. It was painted just weeks before Pearl Harbor and then gifted weeks later at Christmas, a short time after the tragedy and US entering the war. So, we have an amazing change of events for this painter. He goes from being in his early 20’s without much worry, to his world completely changing via draft/entering the war. This goes so well with the painting, which features a young angelic deer in a serene setting, yet we know danger always looms in nature. It was no different for this painter and many other soon-to-be soldiers as their lives were about to be turned upside down. The unintended symbolism absolutely makes this piece special. Size is 9.5 x 7.5. Condition seems decent but I’m sure it could benefit from cleaning. With that said, it’s ready to display as-is. A cool conversation piece with charm and a backstory!
