This sizable 17th century Dutch or Flemish oil on canvas kitchen interior with single figure measures an impressive 38 3/8" x 34 1/4" framed; 32" x 28 1/8" actual and features intriguing lighting effects and numerous vignettes/still lifes in the manner of Floris Van Schooten (c. 1588-1656). The large space features dim light from a single window on the left as well as the soft reddish glow of ember/ pale firelight and depicts a single seated female figure grinding herbs in a brass mortar and pestle while her dog sits near and several chickens and one duck are running free on the tile floor. There is exceptional detail in the cooking area of the elevated hearth and the high shelves taht are crammed with copper and brass offer the artist ample opportunities to demonstrate virtuosic handling of polished metal surfaces. You will note a tantalus/bottle case with silver caps in green (shagreen?) case near the window and a small brazier with inverted pewter chargers heating prior to serving. The work is stable and generally fair condition with numerous scattered losses. (When held up to light, innumerable tiny pinpricks of light pass through the coarse weave of the homespun linen canvas.) It has been reduced somewhat in size and mounted to a modern wooden rack without tensioning corners, so the fabric is a bit lax. It is housed in a handsome, massive wooden frame of the early 20th century. This work is a tour de force of the northern European kitchen interior genre and displays like a museum quality old master even in its compromised state. WE
