(Elton Ernest) Thresher (1881-1937) of Western Massachusetts. The estate was sold at a local auction and I acquired several of his works. This painting is 100 years old and dates to 1910-1920s or prior. This Impressionism oil painting depicts the pastel color palette that Thresher utilized to great effect. Several birch trees with sun drenched leaves and bark sit on the bank of a lake or river. Behind, there appears to be a mountain in the distance. The painting is laid on a type of fiberboard or cardboard. The paint is laid right on the board. Because he painted right over the board, any paint loss might occur. There is some paint chipping here and there along the very bottom left quadrant of the painting, but is hard to see without a close inspection. The oil paint is thick and very textured with bold strokes. He used the pastel color spectrum effect to the fullest in this piece. As far as I know, he rarely signed any of his work as is the case with this painting. The solid wood frame is the original and is in medium condition with wear and scuffing to the edges. Ready to hang. Age: 1910-20s Signed: Unsigned Subject: Birches landscape Medium: Oil Painting style: Impressionism Surface: Type of fiberboard or cardboard Orientation: Vertical Framed Size: 13 1/2” x 10 1/2” x 3/4” Condition: 100 years old; good overall condition. Gentle cleaning optional. Some soiling from age. Comments: Not much is known about this artist. Elton Ernest Thresher lived 1881-1937 and died at the age of 56. He lived in Western Massachusetts New England with his wife Mary Bailey, and painted scenes from his surroundings and neighboring New Hampshire. Thresher was an accomplished Impressionism oil painter and pastel artist, but it is unknown if he was a trained artist or self taught. He certainly painted with passion and energy. As a newly Discovered Artist, his works can now be enjoyed and appreciated. Very few of his paintings at this auction were framed or signed. But all have a very passionate and unquestioned style. #2707345
